According to Orange County officials on May 23, a large chemical storage tank that began leaking toxic substances on May 21 continues to rise in temperature, posing an explosion risk. Orange County Fire Authority official Craig Cove stated that internal tank temperature has reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.22 degrees Celsius), up from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) one day prior, and is rising at approximately one degree Fahrenheit per hour. Governor Newsom declared Orange County in a state of emergency to coordinate resources in response to the crisis.
