Rhine River Water Level Hits Extreme Low, 110-Meter Barge Reduced to 1,000 Tons Capacity on May 27

GateNews

According to Spotbarge data, on May 27, the Rhine River water level dropped to extremely low levels, forcing a 110-meter barge to carry only about 1,000 tons of diesel at the Kaub shipping hub in Germany—representing just 40% of its total cargo capacity.

The situation adds pressure to Europe's fuel supply chain amid ongoing Middle East tensions. The Rhine River transported over 280 million tons of cargo in 2024, with oil products accounting for more than 20% of total shipments.
