Tether Launches GEL₮ Stablecoin for Georgian Lari on May 25 in Government Partnership

According to official announcements, on May 25, Tether launched GEL₮, an official stablecoin representing the Georgian lari, in partnership with the Georgian government under a dedicated regulatory framework. The stablecoin is designed to serve as a digital representation of the Georgian lari, enabling lower transaction costs, near-instant settlement, and programmable payments. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that Georgia is laying the foundation for a more connected, transparent, and digitally enabled financial world. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino noted that stablecoins are becoming part of global financial infrastructure, with Georgia establishing serious regulatory clarity for digital assets and stablecoins.
