Trump Cancels Envoy Trip to Islamabad After Iran Stands Up US Negotiations

GateNews

Gate News message, April 25 — President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had canceled a planned trip by US envoys to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with Iranian leaders after Iran’s representatives indicated they would not attend. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were expected to travel for the talks, which had been scheduled following months of diplomatic efforts.

Trump posted on Truth Social: “I just cancelled the trip of my representatives going to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with the Iranians. Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work! Besides which, there is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!” The White House had announced on April 24 that both envoys would travel on April 25, but Iran’s foreign minister, who had arrived in Pakistan for meetings, did not confirm any scheduled negotiations with the US. By April 25, Iran’s foreign minister had met with Pakistan’s prime minister and army chief before departing for Oman without announcement of the US team’s arrival.

This marks another setback in months of stalled negotiations. On April 11, senior US and Iranian officials held talks in Pakistan lasting over 21 hours, with both sides claiming progress but no deal reached. Trump announced on April 19 that representatives would return to Pakistan, but momentum stalled after Iran said it had not decided whether to participate. On April 21, Trump agreed to extend the ceasefire with Iran for an open-ended period to allow diplomacy to continue. Meanwhile, Israel’s military continued strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on April 25, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordering “vigorous attacks” on Hezbollah sites. Both Israel and Hezbollah have accused each other of ceasefire violations. Trump also confirmed that the US Navy is clearing Iranian mines from the Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately 20% of global oil trade.
