U.S. Army Issues Solicitation for 100+ High-Altitude Surveillance Balloons for Indo-Pacific Deployment in 2026

According to U.S. military media DefenseBlog, the U.S. Army's 921st Contracting Support Battalion recently issued a solicitation to procure high-altitude balloon systems, payloads, and operational software. Industry responses are due June 5, with delivery destined for the Indo-Pacific Command headquarters in Hawaii. The procurement includes commercial balloons, Starlink satellite terminals, military tactical radios, electro-optical infrared cameras, and signals intelligence collection systems operating at altitudes of 18,000–37,000 meters.

According to Axios, the U.S. Army plans to conduct a "large-scale experiment" in 2026 by simultaneously launching over 100 stratospheric balloons and solar-powered gliders across the Indo-Pacific region. A single balloon can monitor areas spanning hundreds of kilometers and operates at a fraction of the cost of a manned reconnaissance flight sortie.
