U.S. Defense Secretary Says Iran Ceasefire Suspends 60-Day Military Authorization Deadline on April 30

According to U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, the 60-day military authorization deadline for military action against Iran has been suspended as a result of the ceasefire that took effect on April 8. Austin testified before Congress on April 30 that the Trump administration no longer needs to seek congressional approval for military operations against Iran. Under the 1973 War Powers Act, the president must decide within 60 days of notifying Congress of military action whether to halt operations or seek congressional authorization to continue. The Trump administration notified Congress of military action against Iran on March 2, with the deadline originally set to expire on May 1.
