Coinbase CEO Armstrong Calls for Financial Literacy Test to Replace $1M Accredited Investor Rule on Friday

On Friday during Yahoo Finance's Power Players podcast, Brian Armstrong, Coinbase CEO, called for a financial literacy test to replace U.S. accredited investor rules, labeling the current system as "outdated" and "regressive." Under existing rules, private placements are only available to investors with net worth exceeding $1 million or annual income above $200,000. Armstrong argued this framework locks retail investors out of wealth-building opportunities and said "anybody should be able to participate" if educated on relevant topics.

Armstrong outlined potential test content including dollar-cost averaging, how to read financial statements, position sizing, and managing market downturns. He acknowledged developing the test would be challenging given diverse investing philosophies, but said "a common set of beliefs and best practices" could be established to democratize access to private markets.
