DeepL Cuts 250 Jobs (25% of Workforce) as AI Rivalry Intensifies

According to Bloomberg, DeepL cut 250 jobs, representing 25% of its workforce, on May 7. CEO Jarek Kutylowski attributed the move to a “massive structural shift” driven by AI. The Cologne-based translation software startup, founded in 2017 as a Google Translate rival, now faces intensifying competition from ChatGPT and other AI translation tools. The company raised US$300 million at a US$2 billion valuation in 2024 and had been considering a U.S. initial public offering.
