Japan's central bank raised its policy rate to 1%, the highest level since 1995, driving the Nikkei index to another all-time high with year-to-date gains of 37.87%. Meanwhile, WTI crude oil futures dropped 5.82%, pressured by geopolitical developments including reports of potential U.S. sanctions on Russia. The U.S. reported May housing starts of 1.177 million units at annualized rates, marking the slowest pace in six years.
