Illinois Governor Pritzker Signs 0.2% Crypto Transfer Tax, Effective Jan. 1, 2027

According to Bitcoin.com News, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the Digital Asset Tax Act into law in mid-June 2026 as part of the state's fiscal 2027 budget. The measure imposes a 0.2% privilege tax on crypto transfers, exchanges, custodial services, and storage, effective Jan. 1, 2027. Notably, the levy applies to the full transaction value regardless of whether the trade results in a profit or loss.

Digital asset brokers with a physical presence in Illinois or earning over $100,000 annually from Illinois users must collect the tax and remit it to the state. The tax is expected to be passed on to retail users via separate line items on invoices. Illinois Department of Revenue projects the measure will generate approximately $60 million annually. The Crypto Council for Innovation and Illinois Blockchain Association have called for a repeal, labeling it the "most punitive digital asset tax in the United States."
