Japan Plans to Restructure Air Self-Defense Force as 'Aerospace' Force in 2026, First Name Change Since 1954

According to the Nikkei Asian Review on June 14, Japan plans to restructure the Air Self-Defense Force as the 'Aerospace Self-Defense Force' in fiscal year 2026, formally expanding its defense scope to include outer space. The draft legislation is currently under parliamentary review. If passed, this will mark the first official name change to Japan's self-defense forces since their establishment in 1954, when the ground, maritime, and air branches were created.
