Meta to Cut 10% of Workforce Starting May 20 as AI Restructuring Accelerates

META-0.29%

According to Reuters, Meta Platforms plans to cut approximately 10% of its global workforce, affecting nearly 8,000 employees, with the first major wave of layoffs beginning on May 20. The restructuring aims to create smaller, faster-moving teams focused on artificial intelligence-driven operations and eliminate thousands of managerial positions.

Meta has increased its 2026 capital expenditure projection to between $125 billion and $145 billion, with substantial portions allocated toward AI infrastructure, model development, and automation systems. The company is also canceling approximately 6,000 open job listings and reassigning roughly 7,000 employees into AI-focused roles as part of the broader cost-cutting initiative.
