Meta's Muse Spark AI Model Faces Commercialization Test One Year After $14.3B Scale AI Acquisition

One year after Meta acquired roughly half of Scale AI for $14.3 billion and brought in founder Alexandr Wang to lead artificial intelligence efforts, the company released its first proprietary foundation model, Muse Spark, in April 2026. However, Meta's stock has fallen 18 percent over the past 12 months as investors question the company's ability to monetize the model and turn AI into a new revenue stream beyond advertising, which currently accounts for 98 percent of Meta's revenue. Challenges include restoring developer trust after the Llama family of open-source models fell flat in 2025, and competition from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Analysts say Meta must demonstrate adoption of AI-first products and show a clear path to commercialization to regain market confidence.
