Nansen CEO: Low-Cost Open-Weights Models Eroding Anthropic and OpenAI's Frontier Model Moat

According to Nansen CEO Alex Svanevik, open-weights models could increasingly challenge Anthropic and OpenAI as not all tasks require frontier-grade capabilities. Models with approximately 115 IQ-equivalent ability but 90% lower costs are sufficient for many use cases, offering significant cost advantages over premium models. Svanevik questioned whether the traditional profit model centered on frontier models remains viable as regulatory restrictions on advanced model deployment increase, suggesting this assumption may warrant industry reassessment.
