According to Financial Times, OpenAI is preparing its largest product redesign since launching ChatGPT in 2022, transforming the chatbot into a "super app" integrating programming tools and AI agents. The overhaul will roll out in coming weeks, initially updating the ChatGPT website and mobile app interface to guide users toward code generation, image creation, and third-party services like Canva and Booking.com. An OpenAI senior employee described the shift as "Chat is dead," signaling the company's strategic pivot toward AI agents that execute tasks such as booking travel and managing calendars, rather than conversational interfaces.
Codex, OpenAI's programming product, is the biggest winner from the redesign. Since launching its desktop app in February, Codex has grown its weekly active users sixfold to 5 million, mostly paying customers. The company now views ChatGPT's nearly 1 billion-user base as a gateway to higher-value paid products rather than the final destination.
