OpenAI's Codex Platform Accounts for 97.9% of Work Output Across Departments as of June 2026

According to OpenAI's latest economic research report released in June 2026, the Codex AI agent platform has become the primary work tool across nearly all company departments. As of June 2026, 97.9% of active users complete work through Codex, with 99.8% of output tokens generated by the platform, marking the transition of AI agents from assistive tools to core productivity infrastructure.

Across departments, adoption rates vary significantly. Engineering teams showed the earliest adoption, with 99% of engineer output tokens now derived from Codex as of June. Non-technical departments including legal, finance, and recruitment surpassed 50% Codex-based work starting in April 2026, reaching over 85% output token share by June. Growth rates also differ by function, with research departments experiencing the fastest expansion at 56-fold median output token increase since November 2025, followed by customer service at 32-fold and legal at 13-fold.
