According to Reuters/Ipsos, as of June 2026, 53% of Americans express concern that artificial intelligence will threaten their or their family members' livelihoods. The poll of 4,531 U.S. adults reflects widespread anxiety as major corporations accelerate AI-driven workforce reductions. Intuit recently announced a 17% global workforce cut to focus on AI development, while fintech company Klarna slashed 40% of its staff. Ford CEO Jim Farley predicted AI will replace over half of U.S. white-collar workers.
Early-career workers face the sharpest impact. The survey found 42% of college graduates are underemployed, meaning their jobs do not require a degree—the highest rate since 2020. Additionally, 76% of employers indicated their 2025 entry-level hiring plans will remain flat or decline compared to previous years, as companies prioritize AI cost-cutting over traditional expansion.
