Anthropic Suspends Mythos and Fable 5 Globally on June 13 After U.S. Export Controls Citing Chinese Access Risk

According to Semafor, Anthropic suspended global access to its frontier AI models Mythos and Fable 5 on June 13 following U.S. Commerce Department export controls over national security concerns. The decision was partly motivated by suspicions that a China-linked group had accessed Mythos, prompting fears the Chinese government could reverse-engineer the model through a process known as "distillation." It remains unclear which organization was involved or how access occurred.

Coinbase and other major crypto platforms that had been discussing defensive access to Mythos through Anthropic's Project Glasswing initiative have lost that tool. Security professionals relying on the model's vulnerability scanning capabilities for blockchain and smart contract audits now have no approved access path. The suspension remains in effect as of June 14, with no announced timeline for service restoration.
