According to Traders Union, El Salvador marked the fifth anniversary of its Bitcoin Law on June 8, holding 7,677 BTC worth approximately $480 million in state reserves. President Nayib Bukele's Legislative Assembly passed the law on June 8, 2021, making El Salvador the first nation to grant BTC legal tender status. In late 2024, the country softened its Bitcoin policy as part of a $1.4 billion IMF loan agreement, making business acceptance voluntary. Despite the concessions, El Salvador has continued accumulating Bitcoin and attracting major crypto firms, including stablecoin issuer Tether, which obtained a digital asset service provider license there in January 2025.
