At its Build 2026 developer conference on June 2, Microsoft announced seven AI models in its MAI series and a second-generation quantum chip, Majorana 2. The company unveiled its first advanced reasoning model, MAI-Thinking-1, which features 35 billion active parameters and one trillion total parameters, and its first code generation model, MAI-Code-1-Flash, now integrated into GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code. Additional releases include MAI-Image 2.5, MAI-Transcribe-1.5, and MAI-Voice-2 with support for 15 languages. Majorana 2 achieves a record average coherence time of 20 seconds for topological qubits, with up to one minute in controlled conditions, and increases operational reliability by 1,000 times compared to its predecessor. Microsoft plans to deploy a commercially viable, fully scalable, and fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
