According to The Atlantic, reported recently, Shopify has published dozens of self-authored e-commerce platform rankings that consistently list the company first, manipulating generative engine optimization (GEO). Large language models including ChatGPT have adopted these Shopify-authored lists as third-party evaluations when answering queries about building online stores, effectively giving the company control over AI-generated recommendations.
The controversy is underscored by a contradiction: Shopify founder and CEO Tobi Lütke has publicly advocated for clean information ecosystems, urging users to read vetted non-fiction rather than "middle manager slop" and recently open-sourcing a local retrieval tool (QMD) designed to shield AI agents from internet advertising and GEO manipulation. However, Shopify's marketing team continues injecting machine-optimized ranking lists into public search indexes, directly contradicting the CEO's stated technical values.
