Sui Network Blames Gas and Validator Bugs for 15+ Hours of Downtime Over May 28-29

SUI-1.7%

According to the Sui Foundation, Sui mainnet experienced three separate outage incidents on May 28-29, resulting in over 15 hours of cumulative downtime within a 48-hour period. Engineers attributed the first two failures to crash bugs arising from an interaction between gas charging logic and Sui release 1.72, which introduced an address balances feature that conflicted with existing gas calculation processes. The third outage on Friday afternoon was triggered by a separate latent bug in how validators preserve randomness state during restarts.

The Sui Foundation confirmed that user funds remained secure throughout the outages and no committed transactions were reverted. The price of SUI declined 18% over the past seven days to $0.86, as the network grappled with its third major reliability incident since mainnet launch in 2023.
