U.S. Detects Possible New World Screwworm Case in Texas, First Since 2016

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on June 4, a possible case of New World screwworm has been detected in southern Texas, posing a potential threat to U.S. cattle herds at their lowest level in 75 years. A sample has been sent to a laboratory in Iowa for confirmation. If confirmed, this would be the first detection within U.S. borders since 2016, when a deer infection was reported in the Florida Keys and subsequently eradicated in early 2017.
