Asian Coal Benchmark Hits 22-Month High at $148.75/Ton Amid Indonesia Supply Curbs

According to Bloomberg, Newcastle coal futures for June delivery surged to $148.75 per ton on Friday, marking the highest level since August 2024. Indonesia's newly implemented export restrictions on commodities including coal have delayed shipments from the world's largest coal exporter, tightening global supplies. Meanwhile, rising demand from major consuming markets such as China—driven by increased air-conditioning usage as summer approaches in Northeast Asia—has added upward pressure. The Newcastle contract curve has shifted to a spot-premium structure, indicating near-term supply constraints.
