China's Ship-Grade Steel Orders Booked Through 2028, Annual Output Exceeds 2 Million Tons

A Nanjing steelmaker expects to produce over 2 million tons of ship-grade steel in 2026, with orders already booked through 2028, according to the company's leadership. Rising demand for automotive transport vessels—which require high-precision ultrathin plates to maintain optimal weight distribution—is driving the surge. The average market price for ship plate has climbed to 4,300 yuan per ton from 4,100 yuan previously, reflecting tightening supply and strong downstream demand for specialty grades including crack-arrest steel, ultra-wide plate for cruise ships, high-strength ship plate, and polar low-temperature ship plate.
