According to Stellar's official announcement on June 9, the blockchain network introduced a Quantum Preparedness Plan designed to transition its infrastructure toward quantum-resistant cryptography. The multi-year initiative aims to safeguard accounts against future threats from quantum computers while maintaining compatibility with existing addresses and transactions.
Stellar will implement the roadmap in three phases. In 2026, the network will enable post-quantum signature verification in Soroban smart contracts, supporting NIST standards including ML-DSA-44 and ML-DSA-65. The second phase in 2027 will introduce a Core Advancement Proposal enabling users to add quantum-safe signers to existing accounts alongside Ed25519 keys. The final phase will involve a gradual transition away from Ed25519 signatures. Unlike many blockchains requiring account migration, Stellar's architecture allows users to adopt quantum-safe methods without changing wallet addresses or transferring funds.
